"I, Robot" is an arcade shooter game introduced in 1984 by Atari, Inc. Developed by Dave Theurer, only a limited number of 750 to 1000 arcade cabinets were ever manufactured. This arcade machine offers two games in one. The primary game, I, Robot, immerses players in the role of "Unhappy Interface Robot #1984," a subservient robot rebelling against the oppressive Big Brother. The objective entails navigating the servant bot through 126 levels, converting red squares to blue in order to dismantle Big Brother's shield and eye. Additionally, players can switch to the secondary game, Doodle City, a drawing tool that provides three minutes of creative fun.
I, Robot stands out as the initial commercially produced arcade video game entirely featuring real-time, flat-shaded, 3D polygon graphics. Earlier real-time 3D graphics were typically represented by vector lines, as seen in Atari's Tempest (1981), a "tube shooter" also designed by Dave Theurer. Although Funai's laserdisc game Interstellar (1983) had previously incorporated pre-rendered 3D computer graphics, and Simutrek's Cube Quest (1983) combined real-time 3D graphics with laserdisc full-motion video backgrounds, I, Robot was groundbreaking in its use of entirely rendered 3D polygon graphics during runtime. Additionally, it was the first video game to offer camera control options. The game was initially named "Ice Castles" but was later changed to "I, Robot."
Development:
Upon its release, I, Robot received a lukewarm reception and struggled financially. Approximately 750 to 1000 units of the game were produced, with only a few confirmed to exist today. Nevertheless, the remaining arcade cabinets have become coveted collectibles, and the game has earned subsequent acclaim for its pioneering 3D graphics. It has even been recognized as one of the "notable classics" of its era by author David Ellis.
I, Robot and Return of the Jedi marked the final two arcade games released by Atari, Inc. Shortly thereafter, the company underwent a division, with the home console and personal computer divisions being sold to Jack Tramiel and rebranded as Atari Corporation. The arcade coin-op division was retained by Warner Communications and renamed Atari Games. Marble Madness was the inaugural arcade coin-op game released under the newly formed Atari Games banner.
In I, Robot, players take on the role of "Unhappy Interface Robot #1984," a servant robot who achieves self-awareness and decides to defy Big Brother. To progress through levels, the robot must vanquish Big Brother's giant blinking eye by initially wearing down its protective shield and subsequently targeting the eye directly. The robot discharges energy at the shield by traversing red blocks within the level, transforming them into blue.
It's crucial to note that jumping while the eye is open can lead to the robot's destruction. Various additional hazards, including birds, bombs, and flying sharks, pose threats to the robot during each level. Upon completing certain levels, rather than immediately confronting the eye, the robot must navigate a maze, collect gems, and only then engage the eye at close quarters. After finishing a level, the robot ventures through outer space, tasked with either shooting or evading "tetras," meteors, and various obstacles, including a floating head that fires nails, in order to advance to the next level.
Players can adjust the camera angle during gameplay, allowing for closer views of the robot or an overhead perspective of the level. The closer the camera is to the robot, the higher the score multiplier, but this also increases the challenge of observing the entire level and Big Brother. In later levels, adversaries known as "viewer killers" directly assault the camera, compelling players to adjust the viewing angle or maneuver the robot to maintain the camera's focus. Failing to evade a viewer killer results in the loss of a life.
Gameplay:
The game encompasses 26 distinct level designs; after completing all of them, the levels repeat at an elevated difficulty level, featuring a different color palette, akin to Atari's earlier game, Tempest. The game concludes when the player exhausts their lives.
Doodle City, referred to within the game as an "ungame," offers a straightforward drawing tool featuring a selection of objects from the "game" mode. In some respects, it serves as an experiment in 3D art. Players can manipulate and rotate each shape and leave trails on the screen as they move them. Players can remain in this mode for up to three minutes per credit and can seamlessly return to the primary game at any time. However, spending time in Doodle City deducts one life from the player's life pool per minute.
The game boasts amplified stereo sound and pixel graphics displayed on a 19-inch color CRT monitor. It operates using a Motorola 6809 central processing unit and four Atari POKEY audio chips. Initially, I, Robot was named "Ice Castles."
Dave Sherman developed a specialized bit-slice ("pepperoni") 3D co-processor that facilitated a throughput of approximately 2,000 polygons per second, incorporating four AMD 2901 4-bit slice programmable ALU chips.
The cabinet for I, Robot mirrored that of the Firefox laserdisc game upright cabinet. It featured an Atari-patented Hall-effect joystick, two fire buttons, and two buttons for controlling the player's viewing angle.
The game's gameplay drew inspiration from earlier arcade titles such as Galaga (1981) and Pac-Man (1980). Due to technical challenges and setbacks, the game's release was delayed, necessitating additional testing and research. Ultimately, it wasn't fully released until June 1984.
